What Is Internet Traffic?

If you have an online business or plan to establish one in the near future, Internet traffic is the most important factor that will determine your success or failure. Nothing is more important in online marketing than the ability to generate Internet traffic.

Internet traffic can be defined as a number of people who visit a website in a certain time frame. It is usually calculated daily, but in some instances weekly or monthly. The more people visit certain website within a day, the more traffic it receives.

Quality of traffic is also very important. Basically, when people surf the web, they usually visit popular search engines where they look for relevant information about something that interests them and from there visit websites that come up as a results. Now from there they usually continue to look for more information and click on various links, banners, text ads, etc. that lead them to even more websites. That is how surfing works (but you already know this :) ).

For commercial websites and online businesses, every visitor can be a potential customer and that is why all of them stream to improve their traffic and overall traffic quality. There are two distinct types of internet traffic: targeted traffic and untargeted traffic.

Targeted traffic consists of visitors who are interested in website’s content. Depending on a level of their interest, visitors may be low-targeted, semi-targeted, highly targeted, etc. The more they are interested the better for your business. Imagine if someone is urgently looking to buy a new furniture for his home and just happens to stumble upon your website that sells furniture at excellent rates. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if almost all of your website visitors consisted of people looking to buy new furniture? If you had thousands of them daily, you could get rich literary overnight!

Untargeted traffic consists of visitors who are NOT interested in website’s content. They usually visit such pages accidentally, because lack of information, or they are brought by misleading links, or some other forms of unethical advertising such as spamming. These visitors leave pages quickly. Sometimes they may even be offended. This type of traffic should be avoided and besides – it’s useless.

The goal of every webmaster and Internet marketer is to increase targeted traffic to their website.
