This is also a great way to place links back to your site. Go to Google, Yahoo, or MSN and find blogs relevant to your site. If you find some topic which you may discuss, place a comment with a link to your own site. In some cases, your link may not be accepted in the comment text, but you may add a link that will most likely make your comment "nickname" clickable.
You can use a little trick to gain SE popularity this way. Always pick your nickname to be relevant with your site link, or you may use your site URL as your nickname.
Before you place any comments this way, check if a blog uses redirects for other links! If a blog uses redirects, you will have no use for this link for SE popularity. You can check this easily, just place a mouse cursor over some link and check your browser status bar. If it shows URL in a format http://www.site.com it doesn't uses redirects, but if it shows URL of a blog you are visiting and then some characters, it uses redirects.
This is also important for Blog Directories!!!
You may receive traffic from a redirect link, but it will not affect your SE ranking!
