In my previous pages I already mentioned some ways to place your links on other websites. They are so far: writing and distributing articles, writing testimonials, blogging and writing comments on other blogs.
Another way to gain links is to exchange links with other webmasters.*
When you find some site with a relevant content, you should contact webmaster and ask for a link exchange. Most websites that do link exchanges have a page usually named "Links", or "Link partners". You should also create such a page yourself. If you are too busy to look for relevant websites, go to http://www.linkmarket.net
These links will bring you small amount of direct traffic, but will be crawled by SE.
*Note: Latest SEO reports show that exchanging links is not recommended by many experts. Search engines are viewing it as a "link spamming" technique. Although exchanging few links should not affect much your ranking, you should avoid having lots of links per certain page. Read more at SEO.
Other way is to list your website in internet directories such as: Open Directory Project (ODP) and try to list it for free at Yahoo Directory. Yahoo directory usually charges 299.00$ per year for listing, but they don't guarantee inclusion for that money, only that your site will be reviewed! You can also find some directories which will list your site for free on Yahoo, MSN, Google,...
Listing your site in internet directories can help your SE ranking significantly.
Other way for linking is spontaneous linking. This is a long term project and will only work if you have a content site and you already are receiving significant traffic. If you offer valuable information on your site, other webmasters will link to you. That way the number of links will increase in time.
If you have a commercial website, this will probably not work. Noone will link spontaneously to you except in a very rare occasions (someone purchased something from you and is extremely happy and wants to share). However, there is a cure for that. You should start affiliate program and offer your visitors a chance to earn money by bringing you visitors.
